The Muscovy Ducks at the Green Alpaca
What are they for?
"SOME" people use them for meat but here
Our ducks are used for their eggs (when they are not hatching) and their hard work at keeping bugs and slugs at bay. They are known as the mosquito eating duck. This is where their name comes from originally.
They are our "little" bug patrol" Gestapo! I have even seen them eat a mouse or two…
Eggs incubation to hatching
Each year they raise a clutch of about 10-15 eggs, which they will incubate 25-27 days. The little ducklings will stay with their mom 60-70 days and she will show them what to eat take them swimming and give them flying lessons. Our ducks love to sit on top of the barn and roost for a bit. We have a pond where they will spend time too, but most of the time they are looking for things to munch on.
Personality
We have found Muscovy’s to be sociable, extremely smart, and simply a joy.
Each of them has a separate personality and they are a riot to watch as they communicate with each other!
Our farm would not be complete without these great little feathered friends!
